palliative care for cancer
Cancer poses significant threats to the very existence of human race.Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Around the world, over 10 million cancer cases occur annually. Half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. According to another statistics , by the year 2024, one in three individual will have some or other cancer in their life time. But are we the people, governments and health care systems , viewing this problem seriously enough.I doubt it .Unfortunately most cancers present in advanced stage, where cure is often not a realistic aim.As an average we can say 30% cancers present in early curable stage.70% of cancers needs treatment for symptoms only. This is to improve the quality of life , where the doctors accept the disease and do maximum to prevent its bad symptoms.Unfortunately this cancers cannot be treated at limited facility of cancer centres, which calls for participation of community and hospices. This requires sea change in attitude of society in setting up priorities.Unless we arm ourselves up with enough palliative care facilities, we will find the unfortunate seens of our cities and villages swarming with cancer patients. This is amount to denying dignity of human beings to have a resonable quality of life.
